Foundations for Mariachi Education: Exploring Strategies to Introduce Mariachi Education to Your Music Program

A companion to my Foundations of Mariachi Education workshop, this packet is intended to be a guide designed for music educators who are new to mariachi music and would like to have a starting point to introduce mariachi education to their program.  It has a lot of information that will hopefully answer a lot of those questions that come up when starting a new program.  Some of the content includes:

1. An explanation of the different types of mariachi songs with suggested examples

2. Tips for selecting repertoire.

3. Suggested instrumentation for groups of standard mariachi sizes

4. Stage diagrams and amplification suggestions

5. Important information about the Traje de Charro

6. Included interviews from several veteran mariachi educators from around the Southwest United States.

7. List of listening examples for each type of song

8. Listening recommendations for different mariachi groups

9. List of mariachis to see in Southern California and contact information to the locations.

10. List of recommended singers to listen to.

11. Warm Up/Practice Routine you can use with your ensembles.

12. Sheet music to three pieces.  A cumbia, ranchera, and bolero you can use with your ensembles.

13. A glossary of common terms used among the mariachi community.

It is my hope that this will help music educators of all backgrounds learn about and hopefully introduce mariachi to their program.  It is perfect for music educators, new to mariachi music, student teachers, and veteran mariachi teachers interested in looking at a different perspective.  Please feel to reach out via email if you have any questions.
